No fewer than 11 persons lost their lives on Sunday night in a tragic lone accident at Eruku Bridge along the Abeokuta-Lagos Expressway in Ogun State.

The crash involved a gold Toyota vehicle with registration number GGE722KJ, which reportedly somersaulted and plunged off the bridge after the driver allegedly lost control.

Confirming the incident on Monday, the spokesperson of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Afolabi Odunsi, said all 11 occupants of the vehicle — comprising 10 adult males and one adult female — died in the accident.

According to Odunsi, preliminary investigations revealed that reckless driving caused by driving under the influence and overloading contributed to the fatal crash.

He explained that the vehicle somersaulted before falling off the bridge, trapping the occupants inside after the doors became jammed on impact.

Odunsi added that officials of the FRSC, with assistance from members of the local community, worked to dismantle the wreckage and recover the victims’ bodies.

The remains of the deceased have been deposited at the morgue of the Ogun State Specialist Hospital.

The Ogun State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, urged motorists travelling along the route to avoid excessive speed, drunk driving and overloading, particularly during night journeys.

He also sympathised with the families of the victims over the tragic incident.
