16-year-old Nigerian Boy Dies After Entering Lake in UK

Lincolnshire Police have identified the 16-year-old boy who died after getting into difficulty in a lake in Lincoln, with his devastated family paying a heartfelt tribute to a teenager they described as a source of joy, love and inspiration.

The teenager, Iretomiwa Abiodun Micheal, popularly known as Tomiwa, was rescued from Swanholme Lakes on 9 July 2026 after emergency services responded to reports of a concern for safety at the popular beauty spot.

According to a statement issued by Lincolnshire Police on Friday, officers received an emergency call at about 5:48 p.m., prompting a swift response from police, Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue, and the East Midlands Ambulance Service.

Although Tomiwa initially showed signs of responding to treatment at the scene, he sadly died later that evening in hospital at 8:50 p.m., with his parents by his side.

Police said a file would be prepared for the coroner, who will investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragic drowning.

In an emotional tribute released through the police, Tomiwa’s parents, Abiodun and Tope Micheal, remembered their son as a “vibrant, energetic and unforgettable young man whose presence illuminated every space he entered.”

“His laughter, warmth and joyful spirit touched countless lives,” they said.

The grieving parents described Tomiwa as the eldest of four brothers, a caring sibling who naturally assumed the role of protector and mentor within the family.

“His younger brothers adored him, and he cared for them with tenderness, always making them smile and supporting them in every way,” they said.

Beyond his family, Tomiwa was known for his passion for football. He played for both Greenbank FC and Lincoln City FC, where he earned admiration for his commitment and positive attitude.

His parents also described him as a “social butterfly” who found it easy to make friends and left a lasting impression on everyone he met.

“He consistently sought the good of others and uplifted those around him. Our home was filled with laughter because of his unique spirit, infectious joy and generous heart,” they said.

Tomiwa was also an active member of his church’s youth ministry, where he was recognised for his faith, discipline and willingness to serve others.

Reflecting on his life, his parents said their son had left an enduring legacy despite his young age.

“Tomiwa leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, discipline, joy and compassion. Though his life was short, it was profoundly impactful.

“He leaves a lasting example for his brothers, comfort for his parents and cherished memories for everyone who knew him.

“Tomiwa will forever remain in our hearts.”

The tragic incident has deeply affected the local community, with investigations into the circumstances surrounding the drowning continuing under the supervision of the coroner.
