Kebbi Govt to Sponsor Mass Wedding for 300 Couples, Offers ₦250,000 Dowry to Each Groom

The Kebbi State Government has finalised arrangements to sponsor 300 couples in the third edition of its mass wedding programme, aimed at supporting families and easing the financial burden of marriage for eligible residents.

The Chairman of the Mass Wedding Committee, Alhaji Suleiman Muhammad Argungu, disclosed this while briefing journalists in Birnin Kebbi on Tuesday.

Argungu said the beneficiaries were drawn from all 21 local government areas and 225 wards across the state after completing a screening exercise. He explained that the initiative, organised by the state government in partnership with the NANAS Foundation, established by the wife of Governor Nasir Idris, is open to all qualified indigenes regardless of ethnic or religious affiliation.

According to him, each groom will receive ₦250,000 as dowry in accordance with Islamic tradition. He added that all prospective couples will undergo compulsory medical examinations to determine their health status and compatibility before the wedding ceremony.

He noted that local government committees had also been directed to verify that every groom has a stable means of livelihood capable of providing for a family, describing the measure as part of efforts to ensure the long-term success of the marriages.

The mass wedding ceremony is scheduled to take place in Birnin Kebbi and is expected to attract Governor Nasir Idris, prominent Islamic clerics and other dignitaries.

Beyond the wedding itself, the state government and the NANAS Foundation have pledged to support the newlyweds as they begin married life. The foundation will provide each couple with essential household items, including beds, mattresses and food supplies.

Argungu further revealed that a monitoring committee has been established to oversee the welfare of the couples after the ceremony and ensure the support provided is used for its intended purpose, reflecting the government’s commitment to helping the new families build stable and sustainable homes.
