DR Congo Ebola Outbreak Becomes Deadliest with over 2,300 Deaths

Health authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo are battling a rapidly spreading Ebola outbreak caused by the rare Bundibugyo strain, with growing concerns over its impact on communities and the country’s already stretched health system.

The outbreak, declared in May, has spread across several provinces, prompting intensified surveillance, contact tracing, treatment and infection-control measures.

The current outbreak is caused by Bundibugyo virus, a rare Ebola strain that has previously been responsible for only two known outbreaks. Unlike the Zaire strain, which has caused some of the world’s largest Ebola epidemics, there is no widely approved vaccine specifically licensed for Bundibugyo Ebola.

The World Health Organisation has warned that the outbreak poses a serious public health threat, particularly because of the high levels of population movement and insecurity in parts of eastern DR Congo. The virus has also crossed the country’s borders, with cases linked to the outbreak reported in Uganda and France.

The first cases were identified in Ituri Province, where health officials initially detected clusters of severe illness and deaths. Investigations later confirmed the presence of Bundibugyo virus.

WHO’s early assessment noted that the affected areas had high population mobility, insecurity and strong cross-border connections, factors that could make containment more difficult.

The outbreak has since continued to expand. By late June, WHO data showed 1,328 confirmed cases and 379 confirmed deaths in DR Congo, while 20 confirmed cases and two deaths had been recorded in Uganda. One imported case was also reported in France.

Health officials are particularly concerned about the challenges of reaching communities affected by insecurity and limited healthcare access.

Ebola is a severe viral disease that can cause fever, weakness, headache, vomiting and diarrhoea. In serious cases, patients may develop bleeding and organ failure. The virus is primarily transmitted through direct contact with the blood or other bodily fluids of an infected person.

Scientists are continuing to study vaccine candidates and other potential interventions for the Bundibugyo strain, while health authorities focus on identifying cases quickly, monitoring contacts and preventing further transmission.

The outbreak is the latest in a long history of Ebola emergencies in DR Congo, where conflict, displacement and pressure on healthcare services have repeatedly complicated efforts to contain infectious diseases.

For communities in the affected areas, the challenge is now not only to treat those who have contracted the virus but also to prevent new chains of transmission before they become harder to control..
