Gunmen kill APC Chairman in Kogi, Abduct Many

Gunmen have killed the All Progressives Congress chairman in Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State, Hon. Ishaq Yunusa, and abducted another occupant of his vehicle.

The incident occurred at about 5pm on Thursday along the Itobe-Ochadamu Expressway, near Ojuwo Olijo in Ofu Local Government Area of the state.

The Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Afusat Saliu, confirmed the attack in a statement made available to journalists in Lokoja on Friday.

According to Saliu, the assailants emerged from the surrounding bush and opened fire on motorists travelling along the highway.

A blue Toyota Corolla with registration number GWA 636 CH was later found abandoned on the road.

The police spokesperson said Yunusa, who was driving the vehicle, was found dead inside, while another occupant was dragged into the bush by the attackers.

“The driver, identified as Hon. Ishaq Yunusa, was found dead in the vehicle, while another occupant was taken into the bush by the assailants,” the statement said.

Saliu said the police, working with other security agencies, had launched intensified operations in the area and were combing the surrounding forests in an effort to rescue the abducted victim and track down the attackers.

She added that Yunusa’s remains had been evacuated to Grimard Hospital in Anyigba for an autopsy, while investigators continued to pursue leads that could help unravel the circumstances surrounding the attack.

The Commissioner of Police in Kogi State, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, ordered sustained security operations along the affected route and directed the command to ensure that those responsible for the killing were brought to justice.

The police urged motorists and residents in communities along the route to remain alert and report any suspicious movement or activity to security agencies.

The command said it would provide further updates as the investigation progresses.
