22-year-old Man Jailed 20 years for Raping Mother

A 22-year-old South African man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for raping his biological mother at her home in Carnarvon, Northern Cape.

The man was sentenced by the Carnarvon Regional Court after DNA evidence linked him to the November 2025 sexual assault. He eventually pleaded guilty to the rape charge after initially denying the allegation.

The incident occurred on November 23, 2025, when the 42-year-old woman was at home with her partner. Both had reportedly been drinking before going to sleep, while the accused had also been drinking at a friend’s house before returning home.

According to the prosecution, the man returned home and found his mother and her partner asleep. He then sexually assaulted his mother while she was unconscious. She reportedly woke up during the assault and realised what was happening before confronting her son, who fled the house.

The woman subsequently informed her partner about the incident, and the matter was reported to the police. Following his arrest, the accused initially denied committing the offence.

However, DNA evidence later linked him to the assault. The National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson, Mojalefa Senokoatsane, said the evidence presented by the prosecution, including the victim’s testimony and DNA results, eventually led the accused to plead guilty.

In her victim impact statement, the woman told the court that she was deeply hurt and betrayed by her son, whom she had raised as a single mother. She said the trauma continues to affect her, noting that she receives counselling and struggles with sleep following the incident.

The court took his guilty plea into consideration while determining the sentence but held that the seriousness of the offence warranted a lengthy prison term.

The 22-year-old was subsequently sentenced to 20 years’ direct imprisonment and ordered to have his details placed on South Africa’s National Register for Sex Offenders.
