Atiku Picks Amaechi as Running Mate for 2027

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has reportedly chosen former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, as his running mate for the 2027 presidential election under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The development follows weeks of political consultations and negotiations within the opposition coalition and is expected to produce an Atiku-Amaechi ticket ahead of the January 16, 2027 presidential poll.

Amaechi’s emergence is seen as a strategic move aimed at balancing the ticket between the North-East and South-South geopolitical zones. Political observers believe the decision could strengthen the ADC’s chances against rival opposition candidates and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The former Rivers State governor had previously dismissed speculation linking him to a vice-presidential slot, insisting after purchasing his presidential nomination form that he was pursuing his own ambition. He also publicly opposed suggestions of a consensus arrangement within the party.

However, sources close to the former minister disclosed that Atiku assured Amaechi of a significant role both during the campaign and in government, helping to secure his acceptance of the position.

The reported decision comes amid heightened political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections, with major opposition figures repositioning across different platforms.

Meanwhile, Atiku used his Democracy Day message to criticise the administration of President Bola Tinubu, alleging that recent actions of the government run contrary to the ideals of June 12 and democratic governance.

In a statement marking Democracy Day, Atiku urged Nigerians to resist intimidation, defend democratic institutions and oppose what he described as efforts to weaken opposition parties.

According to him, Nigerians must draw inspiration from the sacrifices made by pro-democracy activists to ensure that the significance of June 12 is preserved.

He further alleged that opposition parties have faced sustained pressure through leadership crises, defections and the misuse of state institutions, warning against democratic backsliding.

Atiku maintained that institutions expected to serve the public impartially should not be used as tools for political persecution, stressing the need to protect democratic freedoms as the country moves closer to the 2027 general elections.
