ATTA Symposium Highlights Abia’s Readiness, Rapid Development and Gains

The Abia Think-Tank Association (ATTA), an independent and non-partisan body of professionals and intellectuals from Abia State, brought together stakeholders, policymakers and members of the diaspora for its 2026 symposium, organised primarily by its active Lagos branch.

The event, widely described by attendees as both reflective and forward-looking, was driven by the collective efforts of the association’s members, with strong backing from its president, Samuel Iheanyichukwu Ohuabunwa. In his remarks, he expressed gratitude to participants and supporters, singling out the state governor, Alex Chioma Otti, who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Caleb Ajagba.

Speaking in an interview, Dr Ohuabunwa struck a tone of cautious optimism about the state’s trajectory. He noted that Abia, once perceived as unprepared for sustained growth, is now laying the groundwork for long-term development. He credited the current administration with prioritising infrastructure including roads, energy and transport which he said has begun to attract investment and stimulate economic activity.

“As Nigeria’s economy gradually recovers, Abia is positioning itself to take advantage of that resurgence,” he added.

Representing the governor, Pastor Caleb echoed similar sentiments, commending the Lagos branch of ATTA for convening the symposium and encouraging future editions to be hosted within Abia itself. In his engagement with journalists, including publisher Seun Fakoya, he outlined what he described as tangible progress under the current administration.

According to him, significant strides have been made in infrastructure and governance, including the construction of over 1,000 kilometres of roads, improvements in security, and more stable electricity supply. He also highlighted reforms in land administration, noting that Certificates of Occupancy can now be processed within 30 days. Between June 2023 and March 2026, more than 4,000 such certificates have reportedly been issued, a move he said has opened the door to increased investment.

Pastor Caleb further pointed to a marked improvement in the state’s development ranking, stating that Abia has risen from 32nd position in 2022 to 5th among Nigeria’s developing states.

Adding an economic perspective, Uche Orji described Abia as a critical player in Nigeria’s broader economic recovery. Despite historical infrastructure challenges, he noted that the state is already among the country’s most industrialized, currently ranking fifth. With ongoing improvements, he expressed confidence that Abia could soon climb even higher.

He also characterised the state as an underappreciated economic corridor, serving a population catchment of around 60 million people, effectively functioning as a sub-economy within Nigeria. Beyond industry, he cited improvements across key sectors, including security, healthcare, energy and education, portraying a state undergoing steady transformation.

The symposium concluded on a celebratory note, with a book launch and a series of award presentations recognising contributions to the state’s development.
