Boxing Champion Zolani Tete Shot Dead by Gunmen in South Africa

Former world boxing champion Zolani “Last Born” Tete has been shot dead outside his home in Mdantsane township in South Africa’s Eastern Cape province.

The 38-year-old boxer was reportedly attacked by two men wearing balaclavas shortly after arriving at his residence on Friday, according to police.

A woman who was with Tete at the time of the attack was also shot several times. She was rushed to hospital, where she is receiving medical treatment.

Police said the motive for the shooting remains unknown, with investigations into the circumstances surrounding the killing ongoing.

Tete’s death has sent shockwaves through South Africa’s boxing community, with tributes pouring in for the former champion.

His father expressed disbelief over the killing, saying he was shocked by the loss of his son.

South Africa’s Sports Minister, Gayton McKenzie, also mourned Tete but said he would not speculate about the circumstances surrounding his death.

“I will not speculate about who did this or why,” McKenzie said in a statement, before paying tribute to the boxer.

International sports broadcaster DAZN also joined the tributes, writing on X: “Rest in peace, Zolani Tete. The boxing world is mourning the loss of a true champion. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and everyone who loved him during this incredibly difficult time.”

Tete’s killing comes amid continued concerns over violent crime in South Africa. Official figures show that about 5,181 people were murdered in the country during the first four months of 2026, an average of roughly 58 killings every day.
