Breaking News, A Middle Aged Man Commits Suicide In Opebi Road Lagos State.

‎The residents of Opebi woke up this morning like any other day with out knowing that a middle aged man like in his late thirties have hanged himself in the middle of a thick mango tree.

It took the eagle eye of a passerby to notice a dangling two legs spotting a white trainers inside a mango tree on Opebi Road towards Salvation road junction.

No One could ascertain his identity or his resident address. A mammoth crowd from all the environs gathered to watch this unfortunate incident.

As an eyewitness I tried to ask questions from people around who the man could be and what led to him hanging himself?  I got different responses, some claiming that the victim is a LATSMA ( Lagos State Transport Management Authority) official who they saw yesterday.

In the midst of the confusion, a Mopol officer  stepped in and climbed the mango tree to bring down the dead man. Before he lowered him to the ground, he removed a pair of eye glasses in his trouser pocket and a wine cap fell off from the tree looking exactly like that of LATSMA officers cap giving credence that the man might be a Lagos State official.

As soon as he was brought down,  Nigeria Police officers came to the scene and many other rescue service operatives.

I approached the Mopol officer whose name is John who the gathered crowd are praising with shouts of  ” Gallant Mopol” because of how proficiently he brought down the suicide victim to ask what prompted his action to bring the man down?  He replied  ” I am a human being and seeing people looking at the lifeless hanging man,  I feel moved and sympathetic to the dead man. What’s the point taking pictures and wailing and not lowering him to the ground? ”  I had goosebumps as I shook hands with him and thanked him for the kind gesture

As I was about leaving the scene no one has come forward as the dead man relatives or neighbor.

The economic situation in the country has led a lot of people to depression and the number of suicide cases are on the increase. I urge the National Orientation Agency to do more on enlightening Nigerians on the need to speak out to a family member when depressed or when facing difficulties of any sort.  May his soul rest in peace.
