A yet-to-be-confirmed number of Nigerian soldiers have been killed after militants from the Islamic State-backed faction of Boko Haram launched a deadly attack on a military base in Borno State.

Military sources disclosed that the assault took place on Wednesday night when insurgents stormed a Joint Task Force formation in Benesheikh, located in Kaga Local Government Area. The attackers reportedly opened sporadic fire on the facility, using explosives and heavy gunfire that left numerous casualties, including Brigadier-General O. Braimah.

Sources said several bodies were recovered after the attack, while many soldiers sustained serious injuries. A number of military personnel are also said to be missing as search efforts continue.

“He was killed last night along with the Imam of the Brigade, many officers and soldiers. The attack lasted several hours. The camp is Benishek along Damaturu Road; it’s very unfortunate,” a source said.

Another source confirmed the loss of senior leadership, stating, “This is Brig. Gen. O.O. Braimah, 29 Brig Commander in Benishek, who was killed alongside other senior staff officers yesterday.”
