Drama In Abia Assembly As Majority Leader Reportedly Stab Colleague With Beer Bottle In The Head Over Governor Otti’s Cash Gift

Assembly after a violent altercation reportedly broke out among members of the Labour Party (LP) caucus during a closed-door meeting over the sharing of money allegedly disbursed by Governor Alex Otti.

According to a reporter from Sahara reports, the Majority Leader of the House, Hon. Okoro Uchenna Kalu (Arochukwu Constituency), allegedly struck his colleague, Hon. Akachukwu Ucheonye (Aba Central Constituency), with a beer bottle, inflicting a deep head wound and leaving him with a concussion.

The incident occurred at the Aba residence of Hon. Fyne Ahuama, member representing Osisioma Ngwa South, during a meeting attended by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa. Witnesses claimed the Speaker instructed those present not to report the incident or disclose details to the public.

Trouble reportedly began when Hon. Ucheonye, who chairs the House Committee on Appropriation, Budget and Planning, demanded a larger share of the funds, citing his committee’s pivotal role in the process. His insistence angered the Majority Leader, who allegedly attacked him after a heated exchange.

Barely days after the Aba incident, the lawmakers reportedly embarked on a state-funded trip to London, said to have cost nearly ₦1 billion. Ucheonye, who had just been discharged from the clinic, was among those who travelled first class and lodged at the Premier Inn London Town Centre Hotel in Croydon.

However, another confrontation reportedly erupted during the trip. Sources alleged that Speaker Emeruwa, his deputy Augustine Meregini, and Majority Leader Kalu withheld part of the funds meant for the lawmakers. Some members claimed they received only 40% of the approved allowance, prompting a heated altercation that drew hotel security.

The development has deepened divisions within the Labour Party caucus, with aggrieved lawmakers allegedly plotting to impeach the Speaker and other principal officers over alleged financial mismanagement and misconduct once they return to Nigeria.
