The Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Blessing Agbebaku, has resigned from his position amid moves by some lawmakers to impeach him.

Agbebaku stepped down on Monday, throwing the state legislature into a fresh leadership crisis as lawmakers prepare to determine his successor.

His resignation was confirmed by his media aide, Ivy Adodo-Ebojele, in a post on Facebook.

“EDO ASSEMBLY SPEAKER RT HON CHIEF BLESSING AGBEBAKU RESIGNS,” she wrote.

Adodo-Ebojele, however, said further details on the circumstances surrounding the Speaker’s resignation would be made public later.

The development comes against the backdrop of reported moves by some members of the Assembly to remove Agbebaku from office, although details of the issues that triggered the impeachment moves remain unclear.

With his resignation, attention has now shifted to the Assembly as lawmakers are expected to begin the process of electing a new Speaker.

The latest development adds to the political uncertainty within the Edo State House of Assembly, which has witnessed leadership tensions in recent times.

More details shortly.
