Father Confesses to Impregnating His Own Daughter in Adamawa

An Upper Area Court sitting in Ganye, Adamawa State, has remanded a man, Jediel Sylvester, in a correctional facility after he pleaded guilty to an allegation of having an incestuous sexual relationship with his daughter.

The case, which has drawn attention in the state, was heard before Judge Kabiru Musa, who ordered that the defendant remain in custody pending the continuation of legal proceedings.

According to court records, the matter was initiated through a direct criminal complaint filed by the alleged victim and her uncle, Mohammed Audi, through their counsel, Abdulrahman Njidda, pursuant to Section 111 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law of Adamawa State, 2018.

During the proceedings, the prosecution told the court that the defendant took his daughter to a healthcare facility after she informed him that she had missed her menstrual period. Medical examinations allegedly confirmed that she was about three months pregnant.

The prosecutor further alleged that the defendant asked the girl to identify another person as being responsible for the pregnancy. However, she reportedly insisted that no one other than her father had engaged in sexual intercourse with her.

The court also heard allegations that the defendant suggested terminating the pregnancy, but the girl declined.

While giving evidence, the alleged victim accused her father of repeatedly subjecting her to intimidation and physical abuse to coerce her into having sexual intercourse with him.

When the charge was read in court, Sylvester pleaded guilty, telling the court that he acted out of lust.

Following the plea, Judge Musa ordered that the defendant be remanded in a correctional facility pending further proceedings.

The case has been adjourned to a later date.
