Five-yr-Old Girl Swept Away by Flood in Abia

A five-year-old girl, Melody Isaac, has reportedly been swept away by floodwaters following a heavy downpour along Akpu Road in the Ogbor Hill area of Aba, Abia State, in a tragic incident that has reignited concerns over poor drainage infrastructure and flood safety.

The incident occurred on Saturday during a torrential rainfall.

According to reports, Melody’s elder brother, Destiny Isaac, had been sitting on a drainage slab when he called his younger sister to join him. The boy later recounted that Melody noticed he was sitting dangerously close to the drainage channel and attempted to pull him away from the edge. In the process, she reportedly lost her footing, fell into the swollen drainage and was carried away by the fast-moving floodwaters.

Their mother, Christiana Ndukwe, a trader at Good Morning Market, said she had left for work earlier that morning before receiving a distressing phone call informing her of the incident.

Speaking through tears, she said she rushed home only to discover that her daughter had been swept away. She added that she is currently living separately from her husband due to a family dispute, making the tragedy even more painful for the family.

Residents said they immediately launched a desperate search in an effort to rescue the child, but the force of the floodwaters made their efforts unsuccessful.

Eyewitnesses said Melody had been eating before her brother invited her outside to join other children playing in the rain. Moments later, she reportedly slipped into the open drainage channel and disappeared beneath the rushing water.

The incident has sparked renewed calls for the relevant authorities to urgently address the menace of blocked and uncovered drainage systems across the city. Residents warned that inadequate flood control measures continue to pose a serious threat to lives and property, particularly during the rainy season, with children among the most vulnerable.
