Former AGF, Nwabuoku Bags 72-Year Jail Term In ₦868m Fraud Case

A former senior public official who once oversaw Nigeria’s treasury has been handed a lengthy prison sentence, in a case that underscores the continuing battle against corruption in the country’s public service.

A Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced ex-Acting Accountant-General of the Federation, Chukwunyere Nwabuoku, to a cumulative 72 years in prison for his involvement in a ₦868.46 million fraud.

The prosecution, led by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, found Nwabuoku guilty on multiple counts, including money laundering, criminal breach of trust and the diversion of public funds.

Court proceedings painted a detailed picture of how funds meant for government use were allegedly siphoned into private accounts. Prosecutors presented extensive documentary evidence including bank records, payment vouchers and expert testimony to demonstrate how the money was moved through a web of transactions designed to obscure its origins and avoid detection.

Although the court imposed sentences across several counts amounting to 72 years, the terms will run concurrently, meaning Nwabuoku will serve them at the same time rather than consecutively.

For many observers, the case is not just about figures and legal arguments, but a reflection of the human cost of corruption funds that could have supported public services, infrastructure, and livelihoods diverted for personal gain.

In its reaction, the EFCC described the conviction as a significant milestone in its anti-corruption drive, reiterating its commitment to promoting transparency and accountability in Nigeria’s public finances.
