Former INEC Chairman Attahiru Jega Alleged That 2023 General Elections Was Compromised Through Appointment Of Unqualified Nominees

Former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC), Attahiru Jega has revealed that the 2023 elections was compromised through appointing of  unqualified nominees who manipulated the electoral process. According to Premium Times, Jega disclosed this while giving a speech yesterday on the topic; Electoral Reform and Democratic Consolidation in Nigeria: Review of 2022 Electoral Act.

The former INEC boss stated that for a transparent election to hold in Nigeria, The President must not be involved in the process of appointing INEC Chairman. He said Senate confirmation of electoral nominees should be well scrutinised, it should not follow the usual bow and go.

Jega noted that during the 2023 election, some people in the corridors of power appointed unqualified nominees who were not thoroughly screened by the senate. In the end, they compromised the electoral process in favour of their principals.

“We have seen, in 2023 elections, the damaging effect of how people in the corridors of power get their client/partisan nominees appointed, without being thoroughly screened, and then they are influenced to compromise the integrity of elections.” The former INEC boss stated.
