Paris prosecutor’s office has confirmed that French police arrested an Egyptian Olympic wrestler identified as Mohamed Elsayed, over alleged sexual assault.

The prosecutor’s office said that the wrestler who was arrested early Friday morning outside a cafe in Paris, was detained after allegedly touching another customer’s buttocks at the cafe. An investigation has been launched, Reuters reports.

While the police did not release the wrestler’s name, the Egyptian delegation identified him as Mohamed Elsayed, a bronze medalist at the Tokyo Games who was eliminated in the early stages of the competition in Paris.

The Egyptian Olympic Committee announced that Elsayed would face a disciplinary hearing.

If the allegations are confirmed, he could face sanctions, including a potential lifetime ban from competition.

The committee also stated that Elsayed had been granted permission to watch the final wrestling match for his weight category but failed to return to the mission headquarters and turned off his phone afterward.
