I Won’t Fail You – First Mexico Female President, Claudia Sheinbaum Vow

Former Mayor of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum has been elected President of Mexico, making her the first woman to ever achieve such a historic feat.

Mexico’s official electoral authority said preliminary results showed the 61-year-old won between 58% to 60% of the votes cast, giving her almost 30% win advantage over her main rival and businesswoman Xóchitl Gálvez, BBC reports.

Sheinbaum will replace the outgoing President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, on the 1st of October 2024.

She has promised to continue the welfare programs and policies of her predecessor, while also addressing the roots of violence and crime in Mexico.

Her victory is seen as a significant milestone for women in Mexico, where women were only granted the right to vote in national elections in 1953.

Despite the historic nature of her win, Sheinbaum faces significant challenges, including tackling violent criminal cartels and maintaining relations with the United States.

Sheinbaum’s win is seen as a continuation of the populist and leftist policies of her predecessor, and her presidency will be closely watched by Mexico and the international community.

In her victory speech, she told voters she would build on the legacies of Lopez Obrador and promised not to fail the Mexican people.

Sheinbaum’s excited supporters are celebrating her victory at the zocalo, Mexico’s city’s main square flaunting and waving banners reading “Claudia Sheinbaum, president”.

The former energy scientist became the first female mayor of Mexico City in 2018. A post she held until 2023 when she stepped down to run for President, making history along the way.
