Today is International Day Of The African Child (DAC).

The theme for the Day of the African Child (DAC) 2021 is

“30 years after the adoption of the Charter: accelerate the implementation of Agenda 2040 for an Africa fit for children”.

The African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (Committee), established under Articles 32 and 33 of the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (the Charter) selected this theme for the commemoration of the DAC in 2021.

The day of the African Child has been celebrated on June 16 of every year since 1991 when the Organisation Of African Unity initiated it.

It was also in commemoration of the June 16, 1976 Soweto Uprising. That day, about ten thousand black school children marched for over half a mile protesting poor quality of education and demanded right to be taught in their own language.

Many the children were shot resulting to more than a hundred deaths and more than a thousand injured.

Based on this dastardly act, on June 16 every year, governments, NGOs, International organisations and other stakeholders meet to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing the Rights of African Children.
