Lagos Coroner Says Nurse Who Treated Late Singer, Mohbad Should Face Criminal Trial

The Coroner’s Court sitting in Ikorodu, Lagos State, has recommended the criminal prosecution of auxiliary nurse, Feyisayo Ogedengbe, over the controversial death of Nigerian singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba, widely known as Mohbad.

Delivering the court’s findings on Friday, Magistrate C.A. Shotobi ruled that the nurse acted with gross negligence by administering an injection on the late singer without any prescription from a licensed medical doctor.

While the court ruled out homicide or foul play, it concluded that Ogedengbe’s conduct was both “unlawful and professionally negligent.”

”In pursuant to section 29 of the coroner laws of Lagos State, this court recommends that the prosecution of the unlicensed medical personnel by the office of the Director of Public Prosecution should commence appropriate prosecution against Felicia Ogedengbe for unlawful medical practice and gross negligence,” the magistrate said.

On Wednesday, Joseph Aloba, father of the late Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, has filed a notice of appeal challenging the Lagos State High Court’s decision refusing to quash the legal advice by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) which absolved Naira Marley and Sam Larry of involvement in his son’s death.

Aloba, through his lawyer, Wahab Shittu (SAN), filed the notice of appeal on Monday, July 7, 2025, at the Court of Appeal in Lagos.

He contended that the trial court erred in law when it held that the powers of the Attorney-General under Section 211(1) of the 1999 Constitution are “settled and unassailable,” and that prosecutorial discretion is absolute and non-justiciable, save for political or public accountability.
