Malami, Wife, Son Secure ₦200m Bail Each Over Alleged Money Laundering

A Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail to Abubakar Malami, the former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, along with his wife, Asabe Bashir, and their son, Abdulaziz Malami, amid an ongoing trial concerning alleged financial crimes.

In a ruling delivered on Friday, Justice Joyce Abdulmalik set the bail amount at ₦200 million for each defendant, requiring two sureties for the same amount.

The court established strict conditions for the bail, stating that one of the sureties must present title documents for a property located in either Maitama or Asokoro, two of Abuja’s most affluent areas.

Additionally, the defendants must surrender their international passports to the court until the trial concludes.

Justice Abdulmalik also ordered that the former minister and his family remain in the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Service until all bail conditions are satisfied.

The case has been adjourned to March 16 for the trial to begin.

Malami, who was Nigeria’s chief legal officer during former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, is being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for alleged money laundering and related financial offenses.

The trial is anticipated to draw considerable public and legal interest as proceedings officially commence in the coming weeks.
