Man to spen Seven Years in Prison for Advertising Cannabis on Social Media

The Federal High Court in Kano has sentenced a 28-year-old man, Ashiru Idris, to seven years’ imprisonment without the option of a fine after he was found guilty of advertising cannabis sativa for sale on social media.

Justice S.M. Shuaibu delivered the judgment on July 14, 2026, following the successful prosecution of the case by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

According to the agency, Idris came under investigation after a video surfaced online in which he openly advertised cannabis for sale. Acting on the footage, operatives of the NDLEA’s Kano Strategic Command arrested him on April 22, 2026, on the directive of the State Commander.

The court ruled that the seven-year prison sentence would take effect immediately from the date of the judgment.

Reacting to the conviction, the NDLEA Kano State Commander, CN DY Lawal, described the verdict as a clear warning to individuals who use public platforms to promote or traffic illicit drugs.

He said the agency remained committed to identifying and prosecuting drug offenders, stressing that anyone involved in the illegal drug trade would face the full weight of the law.

“This judgment reinforces our resolve to confront drug offenders who brazenly promote illegal substances on public platforms. We will continue to act swiftly on credible intelligence and ensure offenders are brought to justice,” Lawal said.

He also appealed to members of the public to support the agency’s efforts by providing timely and credible information that could help curb drug trafficking and substance abuse across the country.
