Mother Arrested for Stealing Babies, Claims She Lost Her Own Twins

The Delta State Police Command has arrested a woman identified as Joy for allegedly stealing two infants in separate incidents across the state.

The Command’s spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, who confirmed the arrest in a video shared online, said the suspect disguised herself as a customer to unsuspecting mothers before making away with their babies.

According to police findings, Joy first allegedly stole a four-month-old baby from a woman who was selling groundnuts. In a second incident, she reportedly abducted another infant from a woman engaged in ticket sales.

Investigators said the suspect used the same tactic in both cases posing as a buyer to gain the trust of the mothers before seizing the opportunity to take the children.

During interrogation, Joy reportedly admitted to the offences and gave a deeply personal account of events that, she said, led her to commit the crime.

She claimed she had a troubled relationship with the father of her child, alleging that he left her for another woman following repeated miscarriages. According to her, she later became pregnant and gave birth to twins a boy and a girl but tragically lost both children after about six weeks.

Joy told investigators that the loss left her emotionally distressed and fearful of losing her partner, especially as preparations were reportedly underway for the children’s naming ceremony.

She alleged that she did not inform the man about the deaths of their twins and, in a bid to replace them, decided to take the two babies from other mothers.

The mothers of the abducted infants reported the incidents to the police, prompting a coordinated investigation that led to Joy’s arrest and the recovery of the babies.

The police say further investigations are ongoing.
