Mother of 8 Who Delivered Quintuplets Is Dead

A woman in Kano State who recently gave birth to quintuplets has died

Hafsatu Yusuf passed away in the early hours of Thursday at Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, where she had delivered five babies three boys and two girls just days earlier.

Confirming the incident in a telephone interview, the Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Ministry of Health, Nabilusi Abubakar K/Na’isa, said she died at about 2am following complications linked to excessive bleeding after childbirth.

According to him, medical personnel battled to save her life, but their efforts proved unsuccessful.

“She had been bleeding persistently after delivery, and despite all attempts by doctors to stabilise her, we lost her,” he said.

The loss has left a grieving family behind, even as the newborns continue to fight for survival. The quintuplets are currently in stable condition and receiving specialised care at the hospital.

The deceased has since been laid to rest at her residence in Hotoro, in line with Islamic rites.

The incident comes barely 24 hours after the Kano State Government announced it had taken full responsibility for the medical care of both the mother and her children following their delivery.

In an earlier statement, the Ministry of Health had described the birth as successful, noting that both the mother and her babies were placed under close medical supervision.

Hafsatu’s husband, Malam Salisu Nufi’u, had at the time expressed gratitude to the government for its intervention, describing it as timely and lifesaving.

While the family now mourns an irreplaceable loss, authorities say efforts to safeguard the health of the surviving babies remain ongoing. The state government has also reiterated its commitment to strengthening maternal and child healthcare services and reducing preventable deaths across Kano State.
