Mystikal Jailed for 20 Years After Guilty Plea in 2022 Rape Case

Louisiana rapper Mystikal, born Michael Tyler, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to a reduced charge in connection with a 2022 rape case.

The sentence was handed down on Tuesday following an emotional court hearing during which the victim recounted the lasting trauma she said she suffered during the assault at Tyler’s home in Prairieville, Louisiana.

Addressing the court, the woman urged the judge to impose the maximum available sentence. She described a violent attack in which she was allegedly punched, choked and forcibly raped, leaving her with physical and emotional scars that have continued to affect her life.

After the victim’s statement, Tyler was given an opportunity to address the court. Although he initially attempted to speak directly to the victim, he was instructed to direct his remarks to the judge.

“If I did that to you, I deserve the max sentence,” Tyler said while standing before the court.

The rapper was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment for third-degree rape, five years below the maximum 25-year sentence allowed under Louisiana law. However, the term had already been capped at 20 years under a plea agreement reached with prosecutors in March.

Tyler was originally charged with first-degree rape, an offence that carried the possibility of a life sentence. As part of negotiations with prosecutors, he later pleaded guilty to the lesser charge.

In a last-minute attempt to halt the sentencing, Tyler’s legal team filed a motion seeking to withdraw his guilty plea. His lawyer argued that the rapper had not been given sufficient time to fully understand and consider the consequences of the agreement. The court rejected the request and proceeded with sentencing.

Upon completing his prison term, Tyler will continue to be subject to sex offender registration requirements.

The conviction adds to the rapper’s troubled legal history. Tyler previously served six years in prison after being convicted in a 2004 sexual assault case involving his hairstylist. Following that conviction, he was required to register as a sex offender.

The latest sentence marks another significant chapter in the downfall of the once-celebrated rapper, whose career achieved commercial success in the late 1990s and early 2000s before being repeatedly overshadowed by legal troubles.
