Nigeria Institute Of Journalism, Under The Chairman Governing Council Chief Olusegun Osoba, Flag Hoisting And The Unveiling Of The Code Of Ethics Of Professional Bodies.

Nigeria institute of journalism today hoisted flags and unveiling of the code of ethics of Professional bodies on the campus.

In attendance were the chairman governing council, ex-governor of Ogun state Chief Olusegun Osoba, And various media professional bodies had their representatives in attendance.

This is the opening remarks by the provost of the Nigeria institute of journalism Mr Gbenga Adefaye:,

“The Chairman,Governing Council, Chief Olusegun Osoba, Distinguish  Council Members, The President of NPAN, NGE, NUJ, NIPR, IPI, APCON Registrar, Our guests, gentlemen of the press,

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to this flag hoisting and the unveiling of the code of ethics of Professional bodies in our industry on this campus.

As a foremost media and communication training institution in its fifth decade of independent Nigeria, our peers are only in Ghana and Kenya, the Nigeria institute of journalism  (NIJ) remains a public trust of dual heritage: academic and a professional Institute. Our mandate is to train aspiring budding journalists and others in the media and communication discipline, as well as retain practitioners in media and communication discipline of journalism, broadcasting, advertising, public relations, marketing amongst others.

Today we hoist the flags of International Press Institute (IPI), which provided the seed fund in 1963; the Newspaper Proprietors Association Of Nigeria (NPAN), the custodian and guardian of journalism in Nigeria,  the Nigeria Guild Of Editors (NGE), -the gate keepers; Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ)- The frontliners; Nigerian Institute of Public Relations ( NIPR)- the mouthpiece and the Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria (APCON)-the town cried.

Also, we unveil the plague of the code of ethics of these professional bodies at strategic locations on our campus to constantly remind ourselves-faculty, students and visitors of the ethical requirements of our noble profession.  This we hope will serve as constant reminder and consciousness builder for us in integrating the values and ethical standards required for professional practice. As we are aware,  theory prepares you for practice, ethics sustains you in you in practice. The foundation of professional practice is ethics. Our flag must fly at full mast.

Our goal in this assignment is to provide a linkage and identification of these professional bodies with our institution. Our hope is that whoever passes here will appreciate our connectivity when he sees the flags flying. It is important to highlight that the Governing Council membership of our Institution is drawn from these professional bodies. In all, we hope the hoisting of the flags and the unveiling of the code of ethics plague will open a new chapter in the transformation and repositioning of the Institution as we transform to digitally impact our profession.

Lastly,  I must not fail to mention that what we are doing today was initiated by my predecessor, professional colleague and brother,  Mr Gbemiga Ogunleye. I want to appreciate the council,  leadership of professional bodies here present, the academic and management team of the Institution as well as the students, who executed these as their entrepreneur development projects. We are indeed grateful.
