Nnamdi Kanu’s Wife Denies Filing for Divorce

Nnamdi Kanu’s wife, Uchechi Okwu-Kanu, has dismissed reports claiming she has filed for divorce from the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), describing the allegations as false and misleading.

In a statement shared on her verified X account on Friday, Okwu-Kanu said she was compelled to address what she described as “false reports circulating online” alleging that she had initiated divorce proceedings against her husband.

She categorically denied the claim, insisting that no such action had been taken.

“For the avoidance of doubt, I have not filed for divorce. The publication is entirely false and should be treated as misinformation,” she stated.

Okwu-Kanu expressed disappointment over what she described as the continued spread of unverified stories about her family, warning that the circulation of false information undermines responsible journalism and misleads the public.

She urged members of the public to rely only on information released by her or her authorised representatives, while appreciating those who contacted her to verify the reports before sharing them.

“I sincerely appreciate everyone who reached out to confirm the authenticity of the story instead of spreading unverified information,” she added.

Uchechi and Nnamdi Kanu were married in 2009.

Kanu is currently serving a life sentence at the Sokoto Custodial Centre after he was convicted on terrorism-related charges by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja in November 2025.

The court found him guilty on all seven counts brought against him. He received life imprisonment on five counts, a 20-year sentence on one count and a five-year sentence on another, with all the sentences ordered to run concurrently.

The IPOB leader has since challenged the judgement, filing a notice of appeal before the Court of Appeal on 4 February 2026 in a bid to overturn both his conviction and sentence.
