No #EndSARS Protester Is Still Being Detained By Nigeria Police – Police Spokesman

The former lawmaker therefore called on the President to do something about the #EndSARS still languishing in jail to ensure their speedy release.

The Nigeria Police Force has denied having any #EndSARS protester unlawfully detained in its custody or being detained by other security agencies across the country.

The police denied this on Sunday in a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, in response to Senator Shehu Sani’s call on President Bola Tinubu to release #EndSARS protesters still languishing in police detention almost four years after the October 2020 protest.

While speaking at a special dinner organised to mark the June 12 Democracy Day held at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja, Sani said those who took part in the protest should also be considered as champions of democracy.

Senator Sani noted that he and other peers who were part of the fight to entrench democracy in Nigeria as the #ENDSARS protesters learnt from President Tinubu to be dogged.

But the police spokesperson said that the matter of #EndSARS protesters had been concluded and “lessons have been learnt.”

Adejobi further said, “We have forgiven ourselves and moved on.

“The Nigeria Police affirms that no individual is being unlawfully detained by the Nigeria Police Force or any other security agency in Nigeria due to the #EndSARS protest.”

He said, “All arrested individuals have been processed according to the law, and none remain unlawfully detained. In Lagos, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu pardoned approximately 100 suspects arrested by the Police during the protest.

“For emphasis, no one anywhere in Nigeria is under Police detention or being wrongly persecuted for participating in the EndSARS protest. The issues surrounding the protest have been debated, researched, and documented, and lessons have been learnt. We have forgiven ourselves and moved on.

“We urge the public to disregard this claim and remain assured of our commitment to upholding justice, the rule of law, and human rights.”
