Oyo Attack: Show Empathy and Apologise to the Victims for Failing to Provide Adequate Security” — Jimoh Ibrahim To Makinde

Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and Chairman of the UN Fifth Committee on Budgetary and Administrative Matters, Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, has called on Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde to focus on strengthening security and improving governance following the abduction of schoolchildren in the state.

While expressing relief over the safe rescue of the pupils and their teachers, Ibrahim said the state government should acknowledge the trauma suffered by the victims by offering an apology for the security lapses that allowed the incident to occur.

He also urged the governor to demonstrate compassion and provide meaningful support to those affected by the ordeal.

Responding to Governor Makinde’s call for the United Nations to investigate the kidnapping, Ibrahim clarified that the global body does not intervene in the internal affairs of its member states or conduct investigations into domestic security incidents.

He stressed that safeguarding lives and property remains the responsibility of governments at all levels, urging governors across Nigeria to strengthen security measures and work proactively to prevent similar attacks.

The UN envoy further appealed to the Oyo State Government to award scholarships to the rescued pupils, ensuring that their education is funded through every stage of their academic journey.

He also called for comprehensive support for the families of the teachers who lost their lives during the tragic incident, saying they deserve care and assistance in recognition of their sacrifice.

Ibrahim added that if the Oyo State Government requires financial support to meet the needs of the victims and their families, it should make its requirements public, expressing confidence that Nigerians would willingly contribute to secure the children’s future and assist those affected by the tragedy.
