Peter Obi: ‘If You’re Ready to Lead, You Must Be Ready to Die for the People’

Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has reaffirmed his commitment to tackling insecurity in Nigeria, insisting that effective leadership requires courage, accountability and personal sacrifice.

Speaking during an interview on the Nevon Podcast, Obi reflected on his experience as governor of Anambra State and stressed the importance of decisive leadership in combating crime and restoring public safety.

Responding to a question about what he would do as Commander-in-Chief in the face of rising cases of child abductions and insecurity, Obi said he would take direct responsibility for addressing the crisis.

“I fought criminality in Anambra State. We faced it head-on. It’s one government. It’s either I’m in charge or they’re in charge. One person must be in charge,” he said.

The former governor argued that security challenges can only be effectively tackled when there is a clear chain of command and leaders are willing to make difficult decisions.

Emphasising the weight of leadership responsibility, Obi declared that those seeking public office must be prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice in service to the people.

“One person must be in charge. We declare war. If you’re ready to lead, you must be ready to die. If you’re not ready to die, go home,” he stated.

When asked directly whether he would be willing to give his life for Nigeria, Obi responded without hesitation.

“Yes,” he replied confidently.

His comments highlight his longstanding position that leadership is not about privilege but about service, responsibility and a willingness to put the interests of citizens above personal comfort and safety.
