Peter Obi Is Responsible For Blackout In Edo State – Governor Okpebholo

Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has publicly blamed former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi for the persistent electricity blackout and power distribution failures afflicting communities across Benin City and wider Edo State, stirring political controversy on Tuesday, March 3, 2026.

Speaking to a crowd of protesters gathered at Ring Road in Benin City over poor power supply, estimated billing and lack of reliable electricity, Okpebholo said the state government has limited control over the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) and suggested that Obi’s past leadership roles and perceived influence in the company’s ownership implicate him in the crisis.

Okpebholo’s remarks, including the comment “tomorrow they’ll say they don’t have anything,” sparked immediate debate, linking energy challenges to political rivalries as Nigeria gears up for the 2027 general elections.

The governor also pledged to pursue structural reforms to break the BEDC’s monopoly and invite more investors to enhance power distribution in the state.

Critics argue that Okpebholo’s comments politicise a national infrastructure issue, while supporters claim he is defending Edo residents frustrated by frequent blackouts and high billing.
