Ray Emordi Returns to Nollywood After Four-Month Hiatus, Says Burnout Forced Him to Step Away

Nollywood actor Ray Emordi has announced his return to acting, just months after stepping away from the industry to focus on building a full-time music career.

The 35-year-old actor revealed that his time away from film reignited his passion for acting, prompting him to make a comeback after a four-month break.

Earlier this year, Emordi disclosed that he was leaving Nollywood to devote himself entirely to music, describing it as his first love despite finding fame on screen. At the time, he explained that years of balancing acting with his music ambitions had convinced him it was time to pursue his musical dreams without distraction.

However, in a video shared on his YouTube channel titled Nollywood, I Am Sorry, the actor said his break from acting made him realise how much he still loved the craft.

Reflecting on his decision to leave, Emordi admitted that years of relentless work had left him physically and mentally exhausted.

“I stopped acting because I was tired,” he said.

“Imagine acting from 2017 until the end of last year about 300 productions. That’s eight years without holidays. When you keep doing something for so long without taking a break, you naturally become exhausted.”

The actor, who has appeared in hundreds of Nollywood productions, including feature films, television series, YouTube originals and streaming projects, said he now understands the importance of maintaining a healthier work-life balance.

Emordi, who holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Management and a master’s degree in Acting, accepted responsibility for his burnout, admitting that he had taken on far more projects than he could comfortably manage.

“I have only myself to blame. I accepted too many movie roles and didn’t manage my workload properly,” he said.

He assured fans that his return to Nollywood would be different, promising to prioritise quality over quantity.

“This time, I won’t overwork myself. I’ll only take on enough projects to satisfy me creatively without becoming physically exhausted.”

Before leaving the industry, Emordi had intensified efforts to establish himself as a recording artiste, releasing Afrobeats and Afro-fusion tracks including My Lane, Alone, Overdose and Attention. He actively promoted his music across streaming platforms and social media, although the career shift did not achieve the breakthrough he had anticipated.

Speaking about his earlier decision to focus on music, the actor explained that songwriting and recording had always been deeply personal passions and that acting was simply the career that brought him into the public eye first.

Despite returning to Nollywood, Emordi said he has no intention of abandoning music. Instead, he plans to pursue both careers while ensuring neither comes at the expense of his wellbeing.

The actor rose to prominence through romantic dramas, family-themed productions and YouTube originals, earning recognition as one of Nollywood’s most familiar young faces. His performances in films such as Heaven in Mind (2018), Strength of Love (2025) and several popular YouTube productions have helped him build a loyal following across Nigeria and among audiences in the diaspora.

Emordi also stressed that his return to acting is driven by purpose rather than financial gain.

“My general theme for acting is not to make money but to leave a positive impact. I want to leave a positive footprint in the world before I go,” he said.
