Remi Tinubu Calls For End To Child Marriage In Nigeria

Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has called for urgent action to end child marriage and improve maternal healthcare in order to reduce the rising cases of fistula across the country.

She made the appeal while commemorating the World Fistula Day, stressing that early marriage and teenage pregnancy remain some of the major causes of the condition in Nigeria.

According to reports, the First Lady said protecting young girls from early marriage would help reduce health complications associated with childbirth and improve the wellbeing of women nationwide.

Oluremi Tinubu also urged stakeholders to strengthen female education and ensure that every woman has access to quality healthcare services during pregnancy and childbirth.

She noted that improving maternal care and empowering girls through education are critical steps toward addressing fistula and other reproductive health challenges affecting women in the country.

Reports indicate that thousands of women are currently living with fistula in Nigeria, particularly in the North-West and North-East regions, where cases linked to early pregnancy and poor access to healthcare remain prevalent.

Fistula is a serious childbirth-related medical condition that often results from prolonged or obstructed labour, leaving many affected women with severe physical and emotional challenges.
