Shari’a Court Sentences Man To Three Months In Prison For Cheating

A Shari’a court 1 sitting in Magajin Gari, Kaduna, on Monday sentenced one Muhammad Jibo to three months in a correctional facility for cheating two businessmen, Faruq Abubakar and Aliyu Mudi.

The judge, Kabir Muhammad, who gave the convict an option of a N15,000 fine, also ordered him to pay back the N700,000 he had collected and the N50,000 cost to the complainants or face a two-year jail term.

Mr Muhammad gave the ruling after the accused pleaded guilty to the crime bordering on cheating.

The convict pleaded with the court to give him time to pay off the money.

Earlier, the prosecutor, ASP Luka Sadau, told the court that the convict collected N700,000 from the nominal complainants under the pretence that he wanted to clear some issues regarding a contract he was awarded.

Mr Sadau said the convict promised to pay back the money to the owners immediately, but that effort to get the money from him proved abortive.

He said it was later discovered that the convict was not awarded any contract.
