Tricycle Rider Dies After a Police Vehicle Crushed Him at a Checkpoint in Delta State

The family of 43-year-old tricycle rider, Osaretin Collins Onaiwu, is calling for a full investigation and prosecution of three officers allegedly linked to his death in Warri, Delta State.

He reportedly died from severe head injuries after an incident on May 27, 2026, around 7:00–8:00 p.m. at DSC Roundabout, Warri. Relatives and eyewitnesses alleged that officers attached to the Ebrumede Divisional Headquarters Area Command stopped him at a checkpoint when a police vehicle struck his tricycle.

Passengers said the impact made the tricycle somersault, injuring occupants and leaving Onaiwu with critical head trauma. He was later taken to Pinnacle Hospital, where doctors confirmed severe internal ble£ding and brain injury. He was pronounced brain-dead and later died.

The family is demanding an independent probe and transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), accusing authorities of slow action.

However, the Delta State Police Command, through spokesperson Bright Edafe, denied officer involvement, saying preliminary findings point to a hit-and-run tricycle that rammed the victim’s vehicle from behind and fled.

He added that a surviving passenger supported this account and that the fleeing tricycle has been identified for investigation. The command assured a thorough probe and promised justice for anyone found culpable.
