Troops Had 3-Day Warning Before Borno Attack That Killed Brigadier General Braimoh – Gov. Zulum

The Governor of Borno State, Babagana Zulum, has revealed that security agencies had received advance intelligence about the terrorist attack on the 15 Task Force Brigade in Benisheikh, three days before it was carried out.

Zulum disclosed this during a condolence visit to the community following the early hours assault on Friday, which claimed the life of the Brigade Commander, Brigadier General O.O. Braimoh, along with several soldiers and civilians.

Visibly shaken by the scale and circumstances of the attack, the governor described it as both shocking and deeply troubling, particularly given that prior warnings had reportedly been available.

“This is one of the most surprising attacks I have witnessed in recent times,” he said. “Credible intelligence had been available for about three days. There is a need to reassess our security architecture.”

His remarks have intensified concerns over how such a deadly assault could have occurred despite advance notice. Local authorities have also confirmed that intelligence reports were received ahead of the incident, raising questions about possible lapses in response and coordination.

Benisheikh, located along the strategic Maiduguri–Damaturu highway, remains a critical military and transit point in the ongoing fight against Boko Haram insurgents. Although security in the region has improved in recent years, intermittent attacks continue to highlight the persistent threat posed by the group.

The governor called for stronger intelligence sharing, improved vigilance and more proactive measures to safeguard both military installations and civilian populations.

He also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting the Armed Forces and local security outfits working to keep communities safe.

“We will continue to support the Armed Forces and strengthen community resilience to ensure Benisheikh does not fall into the hands of Boko Haram,” Zulum added.

Extending his condolences, the governor paid tribute to the fallen soldiers, describing their deaths as a profound sacrifice in service to the nation.
