The Lagos State Police Command has arrested two suspects in connection with the gruesome murder and burning of a young woman on May 24 in the Gangare area, behind the Mile 12 Market.

Confirming the arrests in a statement issued on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, said the killing was a targeted attack allegedly planned by the victim’s estranged boyfriend and his accomplices. The boyfriend remains at large.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the incident was a premeditated act following a prolonged dispute between the deceased and her ex-boyfriend who attempted to forcefully rekindle their relationship,” Hundeyin said.

The police further disclosed that the victim was from Nasarawa State and had been living with relatives from the northern part of the country in the area. Her occupation remains unclear.

Hundeyin also dispelled circulating misinformation that the woman was lynched over alleged blasphemy, clarifying that there was no religious motive behind the murder.

“Contrary to false reports on social media, there was no blasphemy involved,” the police spokesman stated.

He stated that efforts were being intensified to apprehend the boyfriend and other suspects still at large.

According to him, the arrested suspects are currently in custody at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), where they are assisting police detectives in tracking down others involved in the murder.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) assured the public that normalcy had been fully restored in the affected slum and other parts of the Mile 12 area.

“Residents of Lagos are urged to remain calm and continue with their lawful activities without fear. The outcome of the investigation will be made public in due course,” he said.

He also urged members of the public to exercise caution and avoid spreading unverified information that could cause panic.
