Two Nigerian sisters, Aisha Mohammed, 18, and 17-year-old Zainab Mohammed, have drowned while swimming at Coney Island beach in Brooklyn, USA.

The unfortunate incident occurred at about 8 p.m. on Friday, July 5, 2024.

According to their family, the teenagers ‘just wanted to have their last swim,’ when they sadly drowned.

They had jumped into the ocean for their last swim of the day when they vanished, heartbroken family members told The Post.

Witnesses say it happened when it started raining and everyone on the beach ran for cover by the restrooms. The two teens decided to go back into the ocean. According to witnesses, a man tried to stop them but he apparently couldn’t swim either.

They were found on the shoreline at 9:15 p.m. and rushed to Coney Island Hospital, where they were pronounced dead, the NYPD said.

“They were just trying to have fun out there,” the girls’ uncle Tahir Mohammed, 48, told The Post. “They thought they were just gonna have their last swim and come out.”

It was only their second time going to the beach, Mohammad added.

Lifeguards at the beach are on duty between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., according to the city’s Department of Parks. Swimming is not allowed outside of those hours.
