Why I Chose Kwankwaso as Running Mate – Peter Obi 

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has explained that his decision to choose former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as his running mate for the 2027 presidential election was based on their shared philosophy of governance and commitment to national development.

Speaking in an interview published on Sunday, July 19, 2026, Obi said both leaders are united by a common vision centred on reducing poverty, investing in education, creating jobs and building an inclusive economy.

He dismissed suggestions that the partnership was merely a political calculation, insisting that it was founded on shared values and a desire to transform Nigeria. Obi stated, “We share the same philosophy,” adding that effective leadership requires individuals with similar convictions and policy priorities.

The former Anambra State governor also dismissed speculation of disagreements between himself and Kwankwaso, saying both leaders remain focused on presenting Nigerians with a credible alternative ahead of the 2027 polls. He expressed confidence that the alliance would unite supporters across different regions and strengthen the party’s campaign.

Obi’s remarks come amid intensified political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, with opposition parties seeking stronger coalitions to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Political analysts believe the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket could reshape the electoral landscape by combining support bases across Nigeria’s southern and northern regions.
