Woman Dies by Suicide After 11-Month-Old Son’s Fatal Accident

A 29-year-old woman has died by suicide following the accidental drowning of her 11-month-old son at their home in Bengaluru, India.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, 1 April, while the woman, identified as Pratibha, was alone at home with her child. Her husband, Mahantesh, was at work at the time.

According to police, Pratibha had briefly gone to the terrace to retrieve dried clothes when the tragic incident happened. During her absence, her son, Agastya, is believed to have crawled into the washing area, where he accidentally fell into a bucket filled with water.

On returning, she discovered the child unresponsive in the bucket.

Authorities said the distraught mother, overwhelmed by the loss, subsequently took her own life. She reportedly attempted suicide by ingesting tablets and cutting her wrists before ultimately hanging herself.

Later that evening, at about 6:30 pm, Mahantesh returned home to find the door locked from the inside. Using a spare key, he gained entry and discovered both his wife and child lifeless.

Police confirmed that a suicide note was recovered at the scene, along with an empty strip of 15 tablets. In the note, Pratibha reportedly expressed deep remorse, stating that she held herself responsible for her child’s death and explaining that the incident occurred during her brief absence.

The family had been living in the rented apartment for approximately four years.
A case has been opened, and investigations are ongoing, police said.
