You’ll Be Jailed for a Year If You Kill Chickens or Rams at Home in Malaysia — Nigerian Returnee, Osafile

A Nigerian returnee, Olajumoke Osafile, during a chat with Guardian has revealed that in Malaysia, killing chickens or rams at home is considered a criminal offense punishable by a one-year jail term. Olajumoke, who recently returned to Nigeria after nearly 12 years in Malaysia, described the country as having very strict rules and regulations.

“People are not allowed to slaughter chickens or rams in their homes. If caught, the punishment is a one-year jail term, which cannot be reduced by fines or community service,” she explained.

When asked why such a law exists, Olajumoke said the Malaysian authorities have not officially given a reason. However, locals believe it is related to hygiene concerns, as animal blood can attract flies and be considered unsanitary. As a result, Malaysians are required to buy meat from markets or government-approved abattoirs rather than slaughter animals at home.
