Eight Kano House Of Reps Members Dump NNPP For APC

Eight members of the House of Representatives from Kano State have defected from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), deepening the political crisis within the opposition party.

The lawmakers announced their defection on Tuesday during plenary, presided over by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas.

In separate letters read on the floor of the House, the defectors cited the lingering internal crisis within the NNPP as the reason for their decision to switch allegiance.

The development played out in the presence of Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf; Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin; and former Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, among other political figures.

The defections come barely 24 hours after former Kano State Governor and ex-presidential candidate of the NNPP, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, dumped the party for the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Kwankwaso formally joined the ADC on Monday in Kano, in the presence of key opposition figures including David Mark, Aminu Tambuwal, Rotimi Amaechi, Peter Obi, Dino Melaye, and John Odigie-Oyegun.

He had earlier announced his resignation from the NNPP, citing the need for “strategic realignment” amid Nigeria’s shifting political landscape.

Although Kwankwaso did not explicitly reference the crisis within the party, his exit followed growing tensions in Kano, including a reported rift between him and Governor Yusuf.

He expressed gratitude to the NNPP leadership, particularly the National Chairman, Ajuji Ahmed, as well as members of the party’s National Working Committee and Board of Trustees.

“I extend my deepest appreciation to the National Chairman, Ajuji Ahmed, and the entire National Working Committee for their steadfast support throughout my time,” he said.

Kwankwaso also thanked members of the Kwankwasiyya Movement for their loyalty, assuring them that the struggle for a better Nigeria would continue despite his defection.

“We shall continue to collaborate and work together towards charting a better and more prosperous future for our dear nation,” he added.

His move came days after a series of high-level political consultations involving key opposition figures, including former Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola; Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde; and Bayelsa West Senator, Seriake Dickson.
