The Delta State Governor has reacted strongly to a disturbing scandal following the emergence of videos allegedly showing men assaulting and raping young women during the Ozoro festival.
In a statement issued on Friday, 20 March 2026, in Asaba, the Delta State Government, through the Secretary to the State Government, Festus Ahon, condemned the incident and called for urgent action. The government urged security agencies to swiftly track down and apprehend those responsible for what it described as “heinous acts”.
The statement reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to protecting vulnerable citizens and strengthening law and order, particularly in rural communities.
Meanwhile, the Delta State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of Chief Omorede Sunday, the community head and alleged organiser of the festival, alongside four other suspects from Ozoro in Isoko North Local Government Area.
The suspects have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Asaba for further investigation.
Authorities have assured that anyone found culpable will face the full weight of the law.
Civil society organisations have commended the swift response by the authorities, while also calling for transparency in the investigation and adequate protection and support for the victims.
The combined response of public condemnation and prompt arrests highlights the urgency of tackling gender-based violence and reinforces the need for accountability at the community level. The Delta State Government’s actions send a clear message that such abuses will not be tolerated, and offenders will be brought to justice.
