U.S. Lobbying Firm Pushes for Sanctions Over INEC, ADC Controversy
A United States-based lobbying firm, Von Batten-Montague-York, L.C., has announced plans to advocate sanctions against Nigerian officials amid rising concerns over developments involving the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The firm disclosed that it would engage U.S. authorities, including President Donald Trump and members of Congress, calling for action over what it described as threats to Nigeria’s democratic integrity.
In a statement, the group criticised INEC’s handling of electoral processes, referencing challenges observed during the 2023 general elections as well as recent tensions surrounding the derecognition of ADC leadership factions.
It warned that such actions risk weakening opposition participation and eroding public confidence in Nigeria’s multi-party democracy ahead of the 2027 elections.
The lobbying firm revealed it is already in discussions with U.S. policymakers and intends to recommend sanctions under the Global Magnitsky framework. Proposed measures may include asset freezes, visa bans, and restrictions on access to the international financial system for individuals deemed responsible.
It also faulted what it described as a lack of decisive response by U.S. authorities during the 2023 elections, suggesting that firmer steps could now be taken.
The initiative is reportedly tied to a $1.2 million contract associated with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, aimed at shaping international policy discourse and drawing global attention to Nigeria’s electoral climate.
Meanwhile, INEC’s move to derecognise rival ADC leadership factions, including those linked to David Mark, has deepened internal divisions within the party and triggered broader political reactions.
The situation introduces an international dimension to Nigeria’s political landscape, as scrutiny intensifies over the credibility of future elections.
