Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has reportedly withdrawn the prestigious honour earlier bestowed on Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, in a move widely interpreted as a sharp political message within the troubled Peoples Democratic Party. Reports published on March 20, 2026 say the honour involved the renaming of the 8.3-kilometre Phase II Idi-Ape/Akobo-Olorunda Abaa Road in Ibadan, which had previously been named after Wike in June 2023. It has now been renamed Archbishop Ayo Ladigbolu Road.
The development occurred in Ibadan, Oyo State, and has drawn attention because it comes amid continuing tension inside the PDP, where Makinde and Wike have been linked to rival calculations, shifting alliances, and unresolved leadership disputes. Recent reporting shows Makinde was involved in reconciliation talks around Wike’s camp, making this reversal even more politically loaded.
The withdrawal goes beyond a street name. In Nigeria’s political culture, public honours are symbols of loyalty, relevance, and influence. Stripping one away sends a blunt signal that relationships have soured and that old alliances may be collapsing in full public view.
