Prominent activist Aisha Yesufu has resigned from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), as political realignments intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Yesufu announced her defection on Wednesday via her verified Facebook page, confirming that she will also contest the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) senatorial seat under her new party.
Explaining her decision, she linked the move to her continued support for former presidential candidate Peter Obi, whom she described as representing the “hope and aspiration of a Nigeria that works.”
“The next couple of days will define the future of this nation… I resigned from the ADC to join the NDC as I follow the leadership of HE Peter Obi,” she wrote.
The activist said her initial alignment with the ADC was driven by her commitment to Obi’s political direction, but recent developments made it necessary to switch parties to remain consistent with that support.
She added that her entry into the NDC goes beyond membership, as she is now formally in the race for the FCT Senate seat in 2027.
“Yes, this time I am joining not just as a member, but as one running for the FCT Senatorial seat,” she stated.
Yesufu also noted that she concluded all her responsibilities within the ADC before leaving, describing her time in the party as valuable. She revealed she had served in multiple capacities, including as sub-committee chair, deputy committee chair, and secretary.
Her defection comes amid a wave of high-profile exits from the ADC to the NDC, signaling a broader political shift that could reshape opposition dynamics ahead of the next election cycle.
