Mary J. Blige: I Sometimes Regret Not Having Children

American singer Mary J. Blige has opened up about her decision not to have children, saying her observations of relatives struggling with parenthood influenced her choice when she was younger.

Speaking on the Michelle Obama Podcast, the Grammy-winning singer said she grew up watching family members deal with the demands of raising children, including the challenges of childcare and the loss of personal freedom.

Blige said those experiences shaped her decision to remain child-free.

“When I was younger, I saw my family members struggle raising kids, needing babysitters, not having freedom, so when I was younger I made the choice not to have any kids,” she said.

However, the singer admitted that her feelings about motherhood have evolved with age.

Blige explained that watching her relatives build close relationships with their teenage children has made her reflect on the choice she made earlier in life.

“But now as I got older and get to see how their teenagers are valuable to them, I sometimes regret not having them early too,” she said.

The 55-year-old singer’s candid reflection highlights how attitudes towards parenthood can change over time, particularly as people gain new perspectives through family experiences and different stages of life.
