28-Year-Old Army Officer Killed During Oyo Rescue Operation Laid to Rest

Lieutenant Felix Ademe Isaac, the 28-year-old Nigerian Army officer who lost his life while leading troops during the rescue of abducted teachers and pupils in Oyo State, has been laid to rest with full military honours.

The young officer made the ultimate sacrifice during an operation to free victims kidnapped in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State. The hostages were eventually rescued and regained their freedom on Friday, July 10, following a sustained military operation.

According to Daily Trust, conflicting accounts have emerged over the circumstances surrounding Lt. Isaac’s death. Some reports claim the military convoy he was travelling in struck an explosive device planted by terrorists in the National Park area of Oyo State. Others suggest the officer stepped on a landmine allegedly planted by members of the Ansaru terrorist group, which has been linked to the abduction.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding the exact cause of his death, there is no dispute about the courage he displayed in the line of duty.

Born on 25 August 1997, Lt. Isaac was buried on 10 July 2026 at the 23rd Armoured Brigade Cemetery in Yola, the Adamawa State capital. The solemn ceremony, attended by military personnel, family members and loved ones, honoured a young officer whose service ended in the defence of others.
His death has drawn fresh attention to the dangers faced daily by members of the Nigerian Armed Forces as they confront insecurity across the country.

Lt. Isaac was not the only casualty recorded during the rescue operation. At least two other persons also lost their lives before the mission successfully secured the release of the abducted teachers and schoolchildren.

His sacrifice adds to the growing list of security personnel who have paid the highest price while working to protect lives and restore peace in troubled communities across Nigeria.
