Midnight Inferno Hits Yaba Market, Traders Count Heavy Losses

on

Traders at Yaba Market in Lagos woke to devastation after a major fire outbreak tore through parts of the busy commercial area in the early hours of Saturday, April 4, 2026, destroying shops and goods reportedly worth millions of naira.

The incident occurred in the Yaba/Tejuosho axis of Lagos, with multiple reports placing the worst-hit section around the Popo/Oyabiyi Street corridor, opposite the NLC office.

The fire was reported between about 3:00 a.m. and 3:15 a.m., and eyewitness videos showed thick smoke, intense flames, and frantic salvage efforts by traders and nearby residents.

Early reports said several shops were gutted, while emergency responders from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service moved in to contain the blaze and stop it from spreading to adjoining buildings.

By later Saturday, at least one report citing the fire service said the blaze had been successfully contained and that no casualties had been officially recorded at that stage, though the cause of the fire was still under investigation.

This is not just a fire story; it is another brutal reminder of how market fires continue to wipe out livelihoods overnight in Nigeria’s commercial centres. For many small traders, one shop is not just inventory; it is school fees, rent, survival, and dignity.

Until urban market safety, wiring standards, fire access, and emergency response become truly serious public priorities, too many Nigerians will keep rebuilding from ashes while government statements arrive after the damage is already done.
